Volunteer Opportunities If you're interested in any of the following volunteer positions available at the American Stroke Foundation, please contact Roberta Lindbeck at 913-649-1776 ext. 13 or As an American Stroke Foundation (ASF) volunteer we could use your expertise and experience. The American Stroke Foundation environment encourages and promotes positive outcomes for stroke survivors, caregivers, their families and friends. Our Stroke Activity Centers provide post rehabilitation group classes for survivors in a non-medical, non-clinical setting. Speech Therapist:
Lead group of 5 – 10 stroke survivors in functional and daily communication activities. These groups are comprised of fluent and non fluent communicators.
Reading Instructor:
Lead group of 4 – 5 using newspapers, favorite magazines, or current event articles. Volunteer should be able to assist stroke survivors in identifying and pronouncing words and sentences. There are two levels of reading: Intermediate Reading stroke survivors are relearning words; Comprehensive Reading stroke survivors are strengthening their skills in processing and understanding information. ASF Speech therapist will provide necessary training and materials to facilitate this class.
Writing Instructor:
Assist group of 4 – 5 with tracing letters, writing their names, letters, or something as simple as a grocery lists. Volunteer should be able to multi-task while working with different levels of activities within a group. Materials and training provided.
Game Leader:
Assist with Dominoes, Card Games, Bingo and Game Boards Activities. These activities will assist stroke survivors in strengthening hand movement, memory concentration, and social interaction. Games and materials will be provided. Volunteer should enjoy socializing and full of laughs.
Occupational Therapy Class Leaders:
Lead group of 8 – 10 using objects of different sizes and shapes to encourage hand control, improving mobility and function with impaired arm and hand. Volunteer could be a certified Occupational Therapist, Occupational Therapy Assistants, or student seeking to earn Service Learning hours.
Wellness & Fitness Assistants:
Assist ASF Physical Trainer in Wellness & Fitness Center. Volunteer will monitor blood pressure before, during, and after exercise session. Assist stroke survivors with exercise programs geared toward improving strength, balance, and aerobic condition on Recumbent Nu Steppers and treadmills.
