Caregivers

Being a Caregiver is not easy, but you are not alone. In Kansas and Missouri 839,628 caregivers provide 899 million hours of care each year. Caregivers for stroke survivors face unique challenges. Here are some tips shared by caregivers that you may find helpful in caring for your self and your loved one.

Don’t skimp on your sleep! Sleep is crucial – for everyone. Develop an evening routine that helps you both wind down and relax.

Keep a notepad by your bed. Sometimes it’s hard to “shut off” and quit thinking about all the things you have to accomplish. If something is running through your mind keeping you awake, write it down. This will free your mind up to drift off and you won’t forget what you needed to do.

Develop a caregiver notebook. Include things like names and numbers of family members and other caregivers, medications and when they are to be taken, the stroke survivors regular schedule, copies of legal forms and the location of the originals (ie living will, durable power of attorney, medical power of attorney, etc.), a calendar with doctor and therapy appointments, a place to list questions you have for your next doctor visit, and if you have multiple caregivers a place for them to leave notes for each other. This notebook can go with you to appointments to help you stay organized.

Make a wallet card with important numbers. Type out all your contacts like other caregivers, family members, doctors and therapists. Reduce down to the size of a credit card and laminate. Carry this in your wallet so you always have the information at hand.
